Cosmetics and Vegan treatments: what you need to know.

Vegan skincare and cosmetics have grown in popularity in recent years as more people become aware of the benefits of plant-based products for their skin and the environment. In this article, we will explore the meaning and benefits of vegan skincare and cosmetics.
What does the term “vegan” mean in the field of cosmetics?
Vegan cosmetics are products free of animal-derived ingredients such as beeswax, lanolin, collagen and other animal by-products. These vegan ranges are made from plant-based ingredients, which are more sustainable and environmentally friendly.
For example, a classic commercial balm generally contains beeswax for its texture and preservative effect. Likewise, in several breast or breastfeeding creams, we find lanolin which is known to be allergenic.
Advantages of opting for vegan skincare and cosmetics
It is possible and recommended to choose vegan beauty products. First of all, we can think about the environment: the production of animal products generally requires more resources and generates more waste than the production of plant products. Additionally, animal agriculture contributes significantly to greenhouse gas emissions and deforestation; By choosing vegan products, consumers can help reduce their carbon footprint.
Another reason to choose vegan cosmetic products is that they are generally considered safer for the skin. Plant-based ingredients tend to be less harsh and irritating than animal-based ingredients, making them suitable for people with sensitive skin.
What about cruelty-free cosmetics?
Cruelty-free cosmetics are products that have not been tested on animals at any stage of their production, including the ingredients or packaging used. Animal testing is often used to determine the safety and effectiveness of new cosmetic products, but it can be cruel and unnecessary. Animals used for testing are subjected to painful and sometimes fatal procedures, such as skin irritation and toxicity tests.
As well as being ethical, choosing cruelty-free products can also be better for the environment. Animal testing can have negative effects on the ecosystem, including through the release of toxic chemicals and the disposal of animal carcasses.
European regulations
In Europe, the use of animals for cosmetic testing has been banned since 2013. The European Union (EU) prohibits the sale of cosmetic products that have been tested on animals, regardless of whether the testing took place indoors or outside the EU. This means that cosmetic companies wishing to sell their products in the EU must comply with this ban and cannot carry out animal testing for cosmetic purposes. This is also the reason why you will not see advertising insisting on “cruelty free” in Europe.
However, it is important to note that the ban on animal testing in the EU does not cover ingredients used in cosmetics. In some cases, these ingredients may have been tested on animals in other countries before being sold in the EU. Additionally, some companies may still use animal testing for non-cosmetic products, such as household cleaning products, and may not be completely cruelty-free.
In order to address this issue, several European cosmetic companies have decided to go beyond legal requirements and obtain certification from third-party organizations such as Cruelty Free International and Leaping Bunny. At Pioupiou Cosmetics, we pride ourselves on these principles and have PETA Cruelty Free & Vegan certifications. These accreditations underline our unwavering commitment to no animal testing at all stages of production, including ingredients and finished products.
